帶有「風味」的英文用法

在英文裡有許多和吃與食物有關的片語,使用起來往往能為文章添加不少"風味"!

今天讓我們來認識這些常用的片語及字彙希,望同學們能開始使用在自己的寫作或會話中

根據美國教育部 (U.S Department of Education) 的研究指出,我們的大腦必須至少暴露17次在新字彙之後才能將其內化.

當然,前提是內化必須在搭配前後文及其前後脈絡下 (in the context) 進行背誦才會有效. 千萬不要落入了流傳已久"背字典"的巢臼; 廣讀與使用才是學習背誦字彙或片語的不二王道.

現在讓我們來介紹今天的食物主題片語吧!

1. cream of the crop 出類拔萃的  (直譯: 最上面的奶油)
I’ve read his application, and of all the candidates we have, definitely he is the cream of the crop.
我看過他的履歷,無疑的他是所有應徵者中最出類拔萃的。

2. go on a binge 毫無節制的做某件事 (直譯: 不停地吃喝)
– to eat or do too much of something

Jason went on a binge and ate too much ice cream.
Jason 不知節制的狂吃冰淇淋。

I only binge watch those TV series that matter.
我日以繼夜的一集接著一集,看著我愛的電視影集。

3. acquire a taste for (something)  (直譯: 後天養成的品味)
– to develop a liking for some kind of food or drink or something else

我的朋友Jason最近養成了聽爵士樂,還有吃臭豆腐的嗜好。

4. carrot and stick 恩威並施 (直譯: 蘿蔔與棍子)
– the reward for someone to do what you want or the punishment if they do not do what you want

Our teacher took a carrot-and-stick approach to encourage the students often not turning in their homework.
我們老師對那些不交功課的同學,想出了個恩威並施的方法處制他們。

5. have bigger fish to fry 還有更要緊的事要辦 (直譯: 有更大塊的魚排要炸)
– to have more important things to do

6. icing on the cake 錦上添花 (直譯: 蛋糕上的糖霜)
– something that makes a good situation or activity even better

6. in a nutshell 簡而言之,一言以蔽之 (直譯: 在小核果殼中)
– briefly, in a few words

In a nutshell, the government’s budget plan is a showcase of how incompetent those politician are. Not to mention their arrogant attitude shown on zero tolerance toward constructional criticism is so pathetically self-serving.
總而言之,政府的預算計畫正顯示出這些政客是多麼的無能,更不用說他們對建設性批評零容忍的自大是可悲的圖利自己。

老師沒教你的片語 – 行為篇

又到了PEI ”學校裡沒教過的片語” 時間了。今天我們要來學習 two idioms related to behaviors in a row 兩個有關於行為的片語。

第一個是 The Straight and Narrow 正直坦蕩

定義:a straight and law-abiding route through life. 正直守法的生活行為方式

例句:
1. If you keep on the straight and narrow, you behave in a way that is honest and moral.
正直坦蕩(如果你能持續正直坦蕩做人,你的行為舉止將會是誠實的、合乎道德規範的)

2. You should have no trouble with the police if you stick to the straight and narrow.
若妳行為正直坦蕩, 絕不會招惹到警察。

3. Roger was the kind who followed the straight and narrow every day of his life.
Roger 是位時時刻刻,在每天生活中行為正直坦蕩的人。

第二個是 paint oneself into the corner 自作自受。

定義: to do something which puts you in a very difficult situation and limits the way that you can act 做一件把自己推到一個尷尬困難的處境的事情。

例句:
I’ve painted myself into a corner here. Having said I won’t take less than NT$ 500 an hour, I can’t then be seen to accept a job that pays less.
我真的是自討苦吃/自作自受。自己嘴巴大先說工作時薪沒五百塊不做,我可不能被看到去接比五百元還低價碼來糊口。
